“Los Angeles Police Department”
I came across Los Angeles Police Department when I heard the song “Waste” on soundcloud at the start of this year, so I was pleased to hear that an album was coming out last month. Opener “Cave” is a kinda folk ballad that seems to take the listener to a magical world- imagine a cross between middle earth and wherever Spyro the dragon lives.
Los Angeles Police Depart consists of Ryan Pollie, and the self titled debut album has a forlorn tone throughout, with Pollie’s voice, especially on “She Came Through (Again)”, there is also an intimate feeling with the recording that shines through on this album. It feels like a diary, bedroom thoughts, bedroom pop, private and personal and highly relatable, which is why, for me, this album works so well. Highlights for me are “The Only One”, Pollie singing “you’re the only one I be myself with” capturing that feeling of having a complete connection with someone. “1,000 Leagues” just has a really great hook. Songs sound almost effortless but complex at the same time, it has such great harmonies and has such a pop virtue that it’s hard not to get into this record. I ordered a copy and after some speedy shipping from America it arrived also containing a Rick Dempsey baseball card, the only question I’m left with after hearing this album is, is Rick Dempsey good?
