This is the third instalment of Mariachi El Bronx it feels like more than a simple side project now. It also shows the range The Bronx can have by moving from punk music into mariachi seamlessly. This is the most experimental and least what you would call quintessential classic mariachi album, the intro to “Sticks and Stones” has it’s heavy use of synths but mixes with the mariachi. Mariachi with more experimental twist. You don’t have to be into mariachi or tucking into an extra cheesy enchilada and sipping some tequila to enjoy this album, but why not cause I like enchiladas and tequila, so any excuse, enchiladas taste great and tequila gets you drunk, but it’s a different type of drunk it’s a sunny drunk and involves fruit. I would say this album will leave you feeling “sunny drunk” it has catchy songs and all the different mariachi vibes leave you felling pretty happy, sunny almost, just without the side effects of actual tequila- waking up next day sweating pure alcohol and unable to contemplate eating any kind of breakfast. I feel like whenever I listen to a Mariachi El Bronx album it takes you away from reality, because it’s so different to anything else I would usually listen to. The song “ Right Between The Eyes” is so epic you could be in some kind of spaghetti western scored by Ennio Morricone or something, but the song’s lyrics are so catchy you will feel like you’re in the dessert town playing a acoustic guitar after the final shootout just happened and the hero has just ridden off into the sunset and your town’s just been saved from evil yet again.
Lyrically I think this is such a strong catchy album, everything works so well, especially on “Wildfires” and “High Tide”. I really like Matt Caughthran’s vocals, be it on a Bronx album or a Mariachi El Bronx album but slowed down tracks like “Nothing Changed” & “Eternal” are real highlights for me. But so is “Everything Twice” and the epic “Right Between The Eyes”…basically it’s just a good album, I’m going to end up listing most of the tracks cause they are all that good so just go buy it here if you choose. Its something just a little bit different.
