The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas. I don’t know much about them but I heard their album Indigo Meadow and it’s pretty damm good,-big riffs, distortion, and lyrics about evil stuff (it does have a song called “Evil Things”)- good shit. The sound reminds me of a mix of The Door/Death From Above 1979 riff wise thrown in. Yeah they’re kinda psychedelic and garage rock, not everyone’s thing, but it’s sounding good.
However, I feel like Indigo Meadow promises a lot in parts but fails to deliver. It’s not bad, I just feel like on certain songs like “Always Maybe” there is a lot going on, songs are getting pulled in different directions and in the end they really go nowhere. I read/heard a lot of people saying that this is the weakest album they have put out, but if it is it’s still better than a lot of stuff out there recently, so let’s not get too hung up on it. If something is missing from this outing, it’s still a cool listen, even if it’s not hitting you straight away.
‘Black isn’t Black” the closing track, has a totally different feel to it than any other song on the album, it has a swagger and a murkiness that I wish the rest of the album had. I feel like the album could have had more of this and it was always lurking in the shadows, waiting to be heard but the album has so much going on it was never really heard. There are lots of positives- I really like “Evil Things”, it has a great intro, “Holland” has some trippy vocals on it, “Broken soldier” has got a nice little message about war being terrible in there, with its marching bass and drums, also “I hear colors” made me hear “Paint It Black”. But with “Twisted Light” I feel like it comes together, organ, bass and guitar getting some synergy. “You’re Mine” has that synergy too, it’s a strong finish on this album. I’ve just bought their new release, ,Clear Forest Lake so Black Angels impressed me enough,-will let you know if it wins me over more than Indigo Meadow has. Like I said it’s pretty cool, just feel like it could be a whole lot better.
